Cumbay, Belgrano and the Battles for History
Series of drawings for the series of micro-exhibitions «Illustrated Snapshots» at the Kirchner Cultural Centre.

This work of non-fiction illustration was commissioned by the Centro Cultural Kirchner.
In dialogue with historian Javier Trímboli, I researched and drew from archives in the collection of the AGN/ Archivo General de la Nación. I also resorted to historical paintings of the characters to be portrayed and documentary photographs. The aim was to put into images certain decisive historical events in the formation of the national state: the battle of Vilcapugio and the parleys held by Manuel Belgrano with the ancestral Chiriguano people. There are no photographs or portraits of Belgrano or the Chiriguanos leader, Cumbay. Although testimonies have been preserved of the dialogue between them in the context of the wars for Argentina’s independence from the kingdom of Spain. These chronicles highlight Cumbay’s «docile» personality and his desire to submit to Belgrano’s orders. In the images, or new visual documents that I created, I portray the opposite version to the established one and I propose to read the official history from another perspective.

Este trabajo de ilustración y no ficción me fue comisionado por el Centro Cultural Kirchner.
En diálogo con el historiador Javier Trímboli, investigué y dibujé a partir de archivos en el acervo del AGN/ Archivo General de la Nación. También recurrí a pinturas históricas acerca de los caracteres que debía retratar y a fotografías documentales. Se trataba de poner en imágenes determinados eventos históricos decisivos en la conformación del Estado nacional: la batalla de Vilcapugio y los parlamentos sostenidos por Manuel Belgrano con el pueblo ancestral Chiriguano. Ni de Belgrano ni del cacique cumbay existen fotografías y retratos, auqneu sí se conservarían testimonios que dan cuenta del diálogo que mantuvieron en el contexto de las guerras por la independencia argentina del reino de España. En esas crónicas se resalta la personalidad “dócil” de Cumbay y su deseo de someterse a las órdenes de Belgrano. En las imágenes, o nuevos documentos visuales que creé se retrata la versión opuesta a la establecida y propongo leer desde otra perspectiva la historia oficial.
